Mason Netcel, a standout infielder from St. Charles North, has long shown his inherent talent. He made a significant leap early, moving to varsity during his freshman year. By September, he had committed to Division I Indiana State, firmly establishing his reputation.
This season, Netcel focused on his mindset, enhancing his game beyond statistics. He prioritized maintaining a positive outlook, even when facing challenges. Netcel shared, “I’m happier with the mental side than the stats.” He aimed to stay positive, noting the difficulty at times, but expressed pride in his mental growth.
This focus on mental resilience is a growing trend in sports discussions. For Netcel, managing emotions was crucial. He recalled, “It was huge for me just because as a kid I would strike out and I would be fuming.” Through experience, he learned to leave frustrations off the field.
Coach Todd Genke of St. Charles North commended Netcel’s efforts and maturity. “He’s grown up a lot,” Genke said. “We’ve put a lot on him with leadership responsibilities, and he’s matured well. He’s an exceptionally talented player.” Netcel developed his ability to handle adversity when things didn’t go as planned.
“That’s part of the maturation process. I’m proud of how he’s developed as a human and as a player.”
Genke, a former minor league pitcher, understands the challenges Netcel faces, including dealing with high expectations and the pressure of a Division I scholarship. “Growing up with talent and having expectations can be challenging,” Genke stated. “The maturity he’s shown is evident.”
Netcel’s senior season stats reflect his hard work. He boasts a .320 batting average, with 31 runs, 13 doubles, five homers, 19 RBIs, and a .492 on-base percentage. His performance includes 22 walks and being hit by a pitch 11 times.
Hard work drives Netcel’s success. “He’s an incredibly hard worker,” Genke said. “Talent, coachability, and work ethic can lead to special achievements.” Netcel is also recognized for being a supportive teammate.
Despite having the talent, Netcel faced limited college offers. In a climate influenced by the transfer portal and NIL opportunities, options for high school players are scarce. His offers were from Indiana State and a junior college in Wisconsin.
Initial disappointment in the recruitment process was challenging for Netcel. He noticed peers receiving offers from big schools, while he waited. After attending Indiana State’s camp, he impressed enough to earn an eagerly awaited offer. “I felt like I fit in pretty well and wanted to be there,” Netcel said.
Before transitioning to college, Netcel is driven to achieve success in postseason play. “We have a great vibe going into the postseason,” Netcel expressed. “I feel like we can go on a pretty good run.”
