The New York Knicks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 130-93 on Monday night, completing a decisive sweep to advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. Karl Anthony-Towns played a crucial role with 19 points and 14 rebounds. OG Anunoby contributed 17 points, while Landry Shamet scored 16 off the bench. Both Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson added 15 points each, propelling the Knicks to an impressive postseason streak of 11 consecutive wins. The last team achieving something similar was the Golden State Warriors, who won 15 consecutive games on their way to a championship in 2017.
With a significant lead of 35 points and only 7:47 left on the clock, New York’s starters were pulled from the game. The team enjoyed vocal support from their fans, including notables like director Spike Lee, comedian Tracy Morgan, and actor Timothée Chalamet, with his partner Kylie Jenner. New York awaits their Finals opponent, either the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs, both tied at two wins each in the Western Conference finals. Game 5’s winner will secure home court advantage for the upcoming Finals, set to begin on June 3.
This marks the Knicks’ third Finals appearance since their last championship win in 1973. They previously reached the finals in 1994 and 1999 but fell short against Houston and San Antonio, respectively. Remarkably, it is the 15th occasion post the 1976 NBA-ABA merger that a coach reaches the finals in their inaugural season with a team. The Knicks hired Mike Brown after Tom Thibodeau’s departure. Brown’s experience includes leading Cleveland to the finals in 2007.
For the Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell was the standout performer, scoring 31 points. It was Cleveland’s first sweep in a postseason series since their finals matchup against Golden State in 2018. Mitchell started strong, securing the Cavaliers’ first eight points, and they briefly held a 17-14 advantage. However, the Knicks surged with a nine-point run followed by a 20-0 streak, gaining control over the game.
New York extended their lead substantially, outscoring the Cavaliers and amassing a significant 68-49 lead by halftime. By the end of this dominant game, New York led by up to 45 points. Notably, the Knicks had four players reach double figures by halftime, with Towns achieving a double-double comprising 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The NBA Finals await, presenting New York with the opportunity to build on their historical performance this postseason.
