Trump’s Naming Controversies and Their Impact on Canada

Trump’s Executive Order and Its Impact

President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing federal agencies to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” This decision has spotlighted the debate over geographical names, especially those sharing Trump’s surname on both sides of the border.

Following this directive, Canadian officials in Ottawa are evaluating the renaming of Trump Avenue, a residential street. Suggestions like “Taco Avenue” emerged amid ongoing trade tensions with the U.S.

Renaming Geographical Landmarks in Canada

Geographical names in Canada require approval from provincial and territorial naming authorities and the Geographical Names Board of Canada.

The federal government maintains the Canadian Geographical Names Database, yet alterations for most geographical features usually originate with relevant provincial or territorial authorities. These changes often involve consultations with local communities and Indigenous groups.

Trump-Named Locations in Canada

Official records show several sites in Canada named Trump, including lakes and islands, primarily in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador. These names generally predate Trump’s political career and have no connection to him.

The Trump Islands off Newfoundland’s northeast coast once hosted a small community before being deserted in the early 20th century. Today, they remain uninhabited but attract visitors for leisurely activities and hikes.

Other names include Trump Lake and Trump Creek in Ontario, as well as East Trump Lake and West Trump Lake in the same province.

Street names like Ottawa’s Trump Avenue, named within a New York-themed neighborhood, are managed locally and can be changed through municipal procedures.

History of Trump-Named Sites

Many Trump-named sites in Canada were christened before Trump’s political emergence, with some dating back to periods before his birth. The Trump Islands acquired their name in the 19th century, reflecting a time when a mining and fishing settlement thrived.

Ottawa’s Trump Avenue was named about 25 years ago to fit a thematic development project, alongside other streets referencing iconic New York sites.

Debate Over Trump’s Naming Order

Trump’s order mandates replacing “Lake Ontario” with “Lake America” within U.S. government materials, citing the lake’s historical significance and contribution to American commerce.

The directive covers federal agencies only, without dictating terms for Canada or global entities. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed the change, emphasizing the traditional Wendat origins of “Ontario,” meaning a beautiful or great lake.

This move mirrors Trump’s previous efforts to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” demonstrating his use of executive power to rebrand geographical features.

Canadian Resistance to Changes

The Canadian administration has resisted Trump’s nomenclature alterations, reiterating the historical roots of Lake Ontario’s name. The U.S. orders apply solely to federal bodies and can’t prescribe terms for Canada or other international references.

Although the naming debate rages amid U.S.-Canada diplomatic strains, most sites bearing the Trump name have persisted for decades independently of the U.S. president.
