In Seoul, South Korea, military officials reported that North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile toward the sea on Tuesday. This continues North Korea’s pattern of weapons demonstrations throughout this year. The missile, fired from Jongju near the west coast of North Korea, traveled approximately 80 kilometers, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. This launch took place in the Yellow Sea, the body of water separating the Korean peninsula and China.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff noted that North Korea also launched other projectiles, though further details were not provided. South Korea, in alliance with the United States, remains on high alert to counter any provocations from North Korea. Surveillance efforts have been increased in response to these actions.

This missile test marks North Korea’s first since April 19, when they fired multiple short-range missiles. State media described that event as a display of cluster bomb warheads. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un continues to focus on expanding nuclear and missile capabilities. This follows the collapse of nuclear diplomacy with former President Trump in 2019. While Trump showed interest in resuming talks, North Korea has largely disregarded these gestures. They insist on the abandonment of demands for nuclear disarmament as a precondition for any discussions.
Kim Jong Un has adopted a more aggressive stance towards South Korea, labeling it as the most hostile adversary and moving to sever ties. On the same day, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung addressed his Cabinet, urging advancements in military technology, including AI and drones. He also discussed the potential acquisition of a nuclear-powered submarine, a topic in ongoing diplomacy with the U.S. Though Lee advocates for better relations with North Korea, he underscored the need for South Korea to independently safeguard its security, which would also reinforce the U.S. alliance.
