Mel Gibson Apologizes for Mocking ASL Interpreter at Fan Event
Actor Mel Gibson, known for his roles in acclaimed films, has publicly apologized after footage showed him seemingly mocking a sign language interpreter. The incident took place during a panel at the Fan Expo Canada in Toronto.
Incident at the Fan Expo Canada
On Saturday, Gibson, who is now 70, was present on stage at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. As attendees applauded, Gibson appeared to laugh behind an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. This action sparked criticism online.
“Sometimes when you get pushed out on a stage in a spotlight your mind is all over the place, and sometimes spontaneous thoughtless idiocy is displayed,” Gibson shared with Fox News Digital.
Gibson stressed that his actions had no malicious intent and offered apologies to those affected.
Responses and Backlash
Reactions on social media were swift and varied. A user on X described the choice as “bonkers,” emphasizing the innocence of the interpreter’s role. Another expressed disappointment, noting the hard work that goes into recognizing sign language.
While some found the act hurtful, others viewed the incident as a minor misstep. A comment on X referred to it as “least controversial Mel Gibson incident,” suggesting it’s part of a broader comedic trend.
Future Plans
Beyond addressing the controversy, Gibson confirmed his engagement with his upcoming project “The Resurrection of the Christ.” He indicated ongoing post-production efforts in Toronto.
Role as a Special Envoy
In 2025, President Donald Trump announced the appointment of Gibson, alongside Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone, as Special Ambassadors for Hollywood. The goal is to revitalize Hollywood’s business impact.
Gibson expressed surprise at the appointment but showed readiness to contribute. His longstanding support for Trump adds context to his willingness to assist in this new role.
