A climber tragically fell to his death on Sunday after reaching the summit of Castle Peak, south of Aspen, Colorado. Castle Peak stands at an elevation of 14,272 feet and is part of the Elk Mountains. The incident was reported by Mountain Rescue Aspen.
The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office was alerted, and rescue teams were deployed to the scene. Despite their efforts, they found that the climber had sustained fatal injuries.
Witnesses, including Rebecca Rees, observed the tragic fall. Rees shared on Facebook that it was a deeply sad moment for everyone nearby. One bystander named Robert risked his safety by approaching the fallen climber immediately, hoping for a chance to help.
Unfortunately, we witnessed the event. It has been an extremely sad and terrible afternoon for all involved. He did not survive,Rees stated.
Rescue efforts continued despite the challenging conditions. Helicopter and ground teams, including 21 rescue members, reached the remote location at nearly 13,000 feet in less than two hours, even during a holiday weekend.
The rescue personnel used off-highway vehicles and helicopters. After locating the climber, the helicopter returned to Aspen to collect additional rescue team members. They subsequently evacuated the climber from the mountain by 8 p.m.
Rees praised the responders’ swift and compassionate actions throughout the operation. She noted that everyone involved treated the situation with utmost care and made sure each person felt valued during this difficult time.
