Pink Addresses Backlash Over Macklemore Comments
Singer Pink has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding her criticism of Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian remarks made at Ed Sheeran’s MetLife Stadium shows. She issued a detailed statement clarifying her views on the conflict between Israel and Gaza, and explained how her earlier posts were misunderstood.
Initial Repost and Reaction
Pink originally shared a post from StopAntisemitism accusing Macklemore of promoting “anti-Israel propaganda” and demanding apologies and refunds for Jewish fans. She acknowledged pairing this with “snarky memes,” which led to accusations of prejudice and calls for boycotts on social media.
Clarification and Personal Views
Pink stated she had remained silent for a week, noting that the reposted content “was not in my own words.” She admitted responding to backlash with memes was her choice, saying, “a repost isn’t a statement, and a meme isn’t a spine.”
“I was born a Jew. I didn’t pick it, and I’ve never hidden it,” Pink stated. She mentioned that people assigned beliefs to her without considering her earlier remarks.
She repeated her stance from October 2023, emphasizing Hamas as a terrorist organization, and the need for Palestinians to have a future that respects their humanity. She highlighted, “Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere, and nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child. Anybody’s child.”
Experience as UNICEF Ambassador
Drawing on her role as a UNICEF ambassador, Pink shared her sorrow over losses on both sides of the conflict, stating she has “grieved every one of them, on both sides of that fence.”
Pink concluded that she would not “litigate a complex war in an Instagram caption” nor use slogans to regain followers.
