At least 76 people lost their lives when a passenger ferry caught fire in the Philippines, marking one of the deadliest maritime disasters worldwide this year. Earlier incidents this year included major ferry tragedies in Zimbabwe and Guyana. The Zimbabwe ferry disaster on Lake Kariba led to 94 deaths, while the MV Barima sinking off Guyana’s coast claimed an estimated 100 lives.
The MV June Aster was carrying 132 passengers when it caught fire near the end of a 20-hour journey from Manila to Coron in Palawan province. The vessel was roughly 24 miles from its destination when the fire emerged. Survivors reported hearing an explosion before smoke and flames quickly engulfed the ferry. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, and a maritime safety and criminal investigation is underway. Forensic teams are busy identifying victims from the burned vessel, while officials focus on determining the fire’s cause.
Philippine Coast Guard official Geronimo Tuvilla stated that identifying victims and uncovering the fire’s cause are immediate priorities. As of Saturday, 43 survivors are recorded, with unverified reports on the captain’s status.
“Ferry travel is essential for communities across the Philippine archipelago of 7,600 islands, where many areas are accessible only by sea,” Coast Guard explained.
In Zimbabwe, a government-owned ferry with around 180 passengers capsized on Lake Kariba, killing at least 94 people. Survivors shared harrowing experiences, highlighting inadequate knowledge of life jacket usage. Officials reported that the ferry was overloaded, carrying twice the intended capacity.
In Guyana, the MV Barima capsized with 179 aboard, leaving an estimated 100 people dead and 69 rescued. Questions emerged about the passenger manifest discrepancies and possible crew errors.
In Indonesia, a fire aboard the Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry caused at least five deaths, with many reported missing. The rescue operation saved 230 passengers out of 271 onboard.
A Cyprus ferry capsized in late August, killing eight and leaving about 20 missing. A large-scale rescue effort was launched, using specialist equipment to locate the wreck in deep waters. Survivors recounted traumatic experiences of losing loved ones during the disaster.
