Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana has emerged as a prominent critic within his own party of President Donald Trump’s proposal to distribute $5,000 checks to American adults. “Because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump stated at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas.

This promise rapidly triggered questions regarding its funding and congressional approval. Although Democrats have criticized the plan, Cassidy’s statements are noteworthy because they originate from a Republican senator, emphasizing concerns about government spending, inflation, and national debt.

Cassidy’s Perspective

During his interview on CBS, moderator Margaret Brennan highlighted the United States’ $40 trillion debt and inquired whether the proposal would exacerbate inflation, even if distributed without direct congressional appropriations. Cassidy affirmed, “It’s absolutely inflationary.”

The Louisiana senator suggested that conservatives would likely have opposed the idea if proposed by a Democratic administration. Cassidy criticized borrowing for such a program, warning that it could elevate borrowing rates, increasing consumer costs.

“If the government borrows money, it’s going to drive up how much somebody pays for their mortgage, for their car note, perhaps for their credit card,” Cassidy explained.

He argued that reducing the national debt would offer long-term economic advantages. “We need to actually pay attention to our national debt,” he stated. “If we can control our debt, that will be a stimulus to somebody. That will help them be able to afford life better.”
