Presley Gerber, known for his modeling career and as the son of Cindy Crawford, has passed away at the age of 27. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his death occurred on Sunday at a rehabilitation facility. The exact cause is yet to be determined.
In recent years, Gerber had been open about his mental health and drug use struggles. In a March Instagram post, he reflected, “Pre Ibogaine Flood Dose – quiet moment before everything changed.” He expressed facing longstanding challenges and a sense of rediscovery, writing, “I faced what I had been running from, and somewhere in all of it, I started finding my way back to myself. We shall see… Praying it’s the last time I have to come back.” His post contained hashtags such as “iboga,” “ibogaine,” “rewire your brain,” “love yourself,” and “mental health.”
Ibogaine is a compound derived from the iboga plant, a shrub native to West Africa. It acts as a mild stimulant in small quantities, while higher doses produce psychedelic experiences, including hallucinations. As a pharmaceutical compound, ibogaine is used to treat various health conditions like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and is also applied in managing substance dependency. Studies indicate its effectiveness in alleviating withdrawal symptoms and reducing cravings.
Despite its potential benefits, ibogaine remains classified as a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act in the United States, limiting its legal use since the 1980s when it gained traction in the U.S. and Europe.
This situation is still developing, with further updates anticipated.
