Mercedes Rivalry Intensifies in Formula 1 as Antonelli Wins Canadian GP
The competition within Mercedes for the Formula 1 drivers’ championship intensified with Kimi Antonelli securing victory at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday. The race, which transitioned from wet to dry conditions, involved fierce clashes between Antonelli and teammate George Russell, heightening their title rivalry. This marks the fourth consecutive Grand Prix win for Antonelli, a feat that extends his lead over Russell by 43 points.
Russell, at 28, had to retire from the lead on lap 30 due to what Mercedes described as a power unit failure. Clearly shaken, Russell stepped out of the car visibly disappointed. Antonelli, while acknowledging the situation’s gravity, stated via team radio after his win, “Not the way I wanted to win. Was going to be a good fight with George. But yeah, we’ll take it.”

Russell had dominated throughout the weekend, achieving pole position, and leading both the sprint race and the Grand Prix up until his car’s malfunction. After winning the sprint race on Saturday, he was marginally ahead of Antonelli on Sunday before his mechanical failure.
Reflecting on the weekend, Russell commented on live television, “A bit lost for words right now. From my side, I don’t feel like there’s anything more I could have done this weekend, so I’ll leave satisfied. Of course, I’m really damn frustrated with what’s happened.” Initially considered the championship frontrunner this season, Russell acknowledges the intense competition from Antonelli, who has rapidly emerged as a formidable contender for the 2026 title.
Sunday’s race in Montreal delivered an exhilarating contest. Antonelli initially overtook Russell at the start, but Russell regained his position on lap 6. Antonelli made another move on lap 12, only to be overtaken again. The two remained locked in a spirited battle, with several close exchanges and near misses.
On Saturday, the “sprint” race saw emotions flare as Russell led with Antonelli close behind. Antonelli attempted an early overtake but ran off course, leading to a heated exchange where he accused Russell of “naughty” tactics. Team boss Toto Wolff later rebuked Antonelli for airing grievances publicly.

For McLaren, the weekend was disappointing. Starting third, Lando Norris initially took the lead but both Norris and Oscar Piastri struggled with tire strategies in the changing conditions. After pitting for slick tires amid reliability concerns, they fell behind, with Norris retiring after his car failed, leaving Piastri to finish 11th.
Looking ahead, Antonelli remarked, “The next F1 race is June 7 on the streets of Monaco. It could be a tricky one, but we’ll try to be ready for anything. And I’ll do my best.”
