Former Vice President Kamala Harris is hinting at a possible White House bid for 2028. However, Democratic senators are not rushing to endorse their party’s 2024 nominee.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut stated, “I’ve backed her before, but other contenders will be present this time. I’ve made no decisions about who I would support.”
Sen. Elissa Slotkin from Michigan remarked, “We’re going to have a messy and large primary. It’s going to be every Tom, Dick, and Harry. That’s likely how it should be.”
Harris spoke at the Southbank Centre’s London Literature Festival, promoting her memoir ‘107 Days.’ She remains open to a future presidential run but emphasizes the importance of the elections in 2026. Harris joined Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, on the campaign trail, where she discussed future political plans.
When asked in Detroit about a 2028 run, Harris indicated she hadn’t decided. She urged Democrats to prioritize November elections, stating a successful 2026 election is essential for future plans.
Sen. Angela Alsobrooks from Maryland noted, “We’re focused on 2026. We’re planning to win back the House and Senate.” She expressed personal support for Harris, describing her as well-qualified.
Sen. Ed Markey from Massachusetts commented, “This is going to be a wide-open primary. That’s democracy at its best. Everyone should be able to run for office here.”
Another notable potential contender for 2028 is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York, who identifies as a democratic socialist. California Gov. Gavin Newsom is also mentioned as a potential candidate, although he stated he wouldn’t run if Harris entered the race.
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire remarked, “We should have a broad discussion about the future of this country with many candidates running.”
A University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll in July found Ocasio-Cortez leading prospective Democratic primary candidates in New Hampshire with 22% support. Harris had 5% support. Neither has officially announced a campaign for 2028.
