Texas Political Tensions and Campaign Leaks Emerge
Recent leaks in Texas have brought to light tensions in political circles ahead of the midterm elections. A recording obtained by CNN has highlighted the strained relationship between Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Senator John Cornyn. This tension follows Cornyn’s loss to Paxton in the Republican primary.
Paxton’s Allegations Against Cornyn
According to the audio, Paxton claims that Cornyn privately wishes for him to lose the upcoming election to Democrat James Talarico. Cornyn’s team strongly refutes Paxton’s claims. CNN reports that Paxton narrated a conversation where a friend thanked Cornyn for supporting the Republican ticket post-primary. Allegedly, Cornyn reacted strongly, stating that Paxton would lose and Republicans needed a lesson about the consequences of their decisions. This conversation has not been independently verified by CNN.
Cornyn’s Team Denies Allegations
Cornyn’s spokesperson dismissed the claims made by Paxton, asserting that the conversation described did not take place. Rob Jesmer, Cornyn’s political strategist, emphasized that Cornyn supports the Republican ticket and would be more active in the campaign if he wanted Paxton to lose. Cornyn publicly criticized Paxton’s campaign style, describing him as a “poor campaigner.” Despite supporting the Republican ticket, Cornyn has withheld a formal endorsement of Paxton.
Leaked Audio Raises Concerns
Multiple leaks have surfaced involving Paxton’s comments, expressing concerns over his campaign’s management. In a recording obtained by Politico, Paxton mentioned feeling out of control over his campaign, with directions reportedly coming from Washington, D.C. Additionally, leaked audio published by The New York Times indicated Paxton believed that the midterm Republican National Convention aftermath had weakened his campaign performance. Paxton’s advisor dismissed the Times’ story as manipulated nonsense.
Further audio described Paxton discussing issues affecting his campaign, particularly citing rising fuel prices, attributed to Donald Trump’s actions in Iran, as problematic for the party. At a fundraised event, Paxton also touched upon the need for lawmakers to address mandatory federal spending cuts to reduce the national deficit.
Talarico’s Presence and Debate Requests
After a break due to illness, Talarico returned to the campaign trail. His absence prompted Republicans to criticize and question his priorities. Highlighting his participation in a music festival, critics argued that it sent the wrong message to the constituents he aims to represent.
The ongoing electoral battle sees Talarico narrowly leading or tying with Paxton, creating concern for Republicans in what is traditionally a GOP stronghold. Paxton has avoided debates, despite Talarico’s persistent requests. Talarico challenged Paxton to three televised debates and invited him to speak on Fox News.
