Historical Lessons and Modern Challenges in Geopolitics

The harsh experiences of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan taught critical lessons in the 1930s and 1940s. The devastation caused by these regimes illustrated that large-scale evil exists in the modern world. Ending the Second World War required immense global efforts and sacrifices to halt their destructive paths.

After the war, the Soviet Union and its allies stepped into the void left by the Axis powers. Their goal was world domination through a totalitarian system. This new threat emerged despite nuclear weapons rendering a third global conflict unthinkable in Western societies. On the contrary, the Soviet Union used its nuclear arsenal as a deterrent. It spread communist influence across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Recognizing the global threat of communism, the Truman administration took action in 1950. Secretary of State Dean Acheson outlined the U.S. national security interests in Asia. He marked a security line across the region, yet omitted Taiwan and South Korea as strategic priorities. This omission became significant when communist leaders Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Kim Il Sung deliberated on expanding either into Taiwan or South Korea. Kim preempted the decision by invading South Korea in June 1950.

The Korean conflict set a new precedent: “limited war.” It involved a UN “police action,” avoiding terms like “unconditional surrender” and “regime change.”

Following this conflict, North Korea remains a part of what was termed the “axis of evil” by President George W. Bush in 2002. Today’s geopolitical landscape features Russia and China’s alliances with Iran and North Korea. This coalition poses an increased threat to the West.

Western powers face several potential strategies to address Iran’s leadership of this threat. One approach is continuing current tactics of negotiation, economic pressure, and limited military interventions to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. However, this strategy risks ongoing economic and political strain.

Alternatively, the U.S. could yield control of the Strait of Hormuz to Iran. Such a move, however, would undermine the global navigation principle and possibly ignite conflict, especially concerning Taiwan. This could press the U.S. into military action or concede strategic defeat.

A third path involves adopting a steadfast stance against Iran’s pursuit of nuclear arms and global terrorism. This approach demands systematic strategic communication, similar to tactics from the Cold War. Entities like Voice of America can provide crucial information to closed societies, fostering internal resistance and potential regime change in Iran.

Successful resistance movements throughout history, such as those in France and Poland during World War II, indicate that supported internal defiance is attainable. With Western backing, Iran could overcome its repressive government and participate in global advancements.

A former Pentagon official, Joseph Bosco, stresses the need for strategic recognition of potential threats and the costs of repeating past mistakes.

Joseph Bosco has held roles as China’s country director for the Defense Secretary and directed humanitarian assistance in Asia-Pacific. He is affiliated with the Institute for Corean-American Studies and serves on advisory boards for the Global Taiwan Institute and the Vandenberg Coalition.
