Significant Drop in Russian Bot Traffic
Ukrainian drone strikes on Yandex data centers in Russia have significantly reduced bot traffic, raising questions about the potential impact on Russia’s disinformation campaigns ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. Yandex, the leading Russian technology company, saw its bot traffic fall to less than 1% of the maximum HTTP requests recorded in the past two weeks, according to Cloudflare. This led to speculation that the strikes could disrupt Russian disinformation efforts. U.S. intelligence agencies are monitoring potential meddling by Russia and other adversaries in the November 3 elections.
Ukrainian Strikes on Yandex Facilities
The Ukrainian attacks targeted Yandex’s largest data center in Sasovo, disrupting operations. Yandex reported serious damage, particularly to supercomputers Lyapunov and Chervonenkis, which are vital for AI model development. Following these attacks, significant service disruptions occurred throughout Russia. Replacing damaged equipment will take time and foreign parts, says Russia’s Kommersant newspaper. The global shortage of GPUs and memory chips creates further delay and expense.
Impact on Russian Disinformation Efforts
Cloudflare reported a dramatic drop in bot traffic after the strikes, raising questions about their impact on Russia’s disinformation machine. Political figures and security experts have expressed concerns about how this may affect Russia’s ability to conduct its typical information campaigns. However, experts, such as Hadi Ghanbari, caution that while automated web traffic was affected, it’s not clear that social media bot activity has been impacted significantly due to these outages.
Wider Effects of Data Center Strikes
Beyond disinformation campaigns, cybersecurity consultancy TrustedSec highlighted broader implications. Disruptions might affect various malicious activities, including ransomware and cybercrime operations. Former U.S Homeland Security analyst Jason Vest noted that lower bot traffic doesn’t necessarily equate to diminished Russian cyber capabilities, as operators may rebuild or relocate infrastructure. This suggests that U.S. defenders should remain vigilant of potential relocation of activity.
Consumer Impact in Russia
Russian consumers and businesses have encountered outages affecting banks, cloud services, and other online services. Yandex Pay users, for instance, faced difficulties withdrawing funds, as reported by Verstka news outlet. The outages highlight the systemic risks of targeting critical data centers.
Data Centers: A New Front in the Conflict
The focus on data centers marks a new chapter in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Experts suggest that securing these centers is now crucial. Data centers are pivotal to operations, and their vulnerabilities pose risks across supply chains. With Ukrainian data reportedly hosted in foreign centers, these locations could become targets themselves.
