As waves fiercely hit the boardwalk on Long Beach’s Peninsula, Genevieve Beals watched with a sense of unease. A past marked by wildfires that forced her out of her condominium in Corona left her with feelings of anxiety. ‘I had to be evacuated twice,’ Beals recalled, noting how even the reflection of sunlight on distant windows triggers her stress.
Beals sought peace at the beach only to encounter waves surging onto the boardwalk near her rented apartment, helicopters hovering overhead, and seawater nearly entering her space with each high tide. ‘It’s just, like, here I am again,’ she expressed, capturing her frustration.

From Disaster to Another
Beals embodies the resilience many Californians must muster. Despite warnings from Long Beach city officials in 2019 about impending sea level threats, the increasing frequency and severity of these occurrences have taken residents by surprise. Homeowners were advised to prepare for eventual evacuation.
Jerry Schubel, then-president of the Aquarium of the Pacific, emphasized the reality: leaving the coast is the only sustainable solution. Many like Beals, who had moved to areas perceived safe from wildfires, now face coastal threats. ‘We looked at everything,’ Beals said about her careful choice of the Corona condo, only to evacuate twice due to fire threats.
Flooding troubles escalated with relentless storms fueled by the current El Niño, characterized by unusually warm central and eastern Pacific waters. The king tides in August formed only the beginning of severe coastal damage, affecting areas like Long Beach and Newport Beach.
Future Prospects Appear Dim
Residents recently received notices from Long Beach cautioning about more king tides expected in late November, December, and January. Beals’s lease will soon end, providing her an opportunity to relocate, yet deciding on a safe destination remains challenging given the widespread environmental threats.
The paradox of longing for the picturesque yet turbulent beach life leaves many Californians grappling with complex choices. When the weather cooperates, the coast’s allure is undeniable, but the looming risks remain ever-present.
Hurricanes and Marine Displacement
The Pacific has seen unusual hurricane activity driven by global warming effects, with added heat from El Niño and decreased wind shear contributing to stronger storms. According to researchers at Colorado State University, these conditions led to record-high levels of cyclone activity, surpassing previous records.
El Niño also altered marine ecosystems, shifting species like hammerhead sharks and devil rays to regions where they are uncommonly found. ‘We’re seeing fish that should be in Cabo San Lucas right now,’ noted NOAA fish biologist Owyn Snodgrass.
Challenges Beyond Nature
On the urban front, iconic sites like Mel’s Drive-In at Santa Monica face potential demolition due to development plans, marking disruptive changes to historical landmarks. Other societal issues, such as child abuse allegations linked to the Arcadia surrogacy mansion, reveal ongoing social challenges.
Community Perspectives
Recent commentary highlights concerns such as the regulation of AI and sports aspirations in state teams. Meanwhile, residents reflect on personal preferences emphasizing simplicity and enjoyment, with treats like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups representing nostalgic elements of seasonal joy.
