Tragic Incidents Involving Law Enforcement Officers in Philadelphia and South Dakota
Two tragic incidents have recently left the law enforcement community in mourning: one in Philadelphia and another in South Dakota. In Philadelphia, Officer Shane Seiber was killed, and his partner was hospitalized after a deadly ambush in West Philadelphia. The suspect, Eric Lewis, a Philadelphia Water Department employee, has been charged with over 70 counts, including murder and homicide of a law enforcement officer. Lewis has a criminal record dating back to 2012.
Meanwhile, in South Dakota, a fatal shooting occurred involving Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Deputy Katherine Frank in Sioux Falls. Deputy Frank was critically wounded during a confrontation at a home. She passed away after spending three days in critical condition, surrounded by family. Frank’s death is deeply felt by the law enforcement community, with tributes acknowledging her professionalism and dedication.
The suspect in the South Dakota incident, Brandon John Oetken, faces charges including three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault. Following Frank’s death, it is unclear whether additional charges will be brought against Oetken. The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the inquiry.
Minnehaha County jail records include a felony charge of disarming a law enforcement officer. Deputy Frank previously worked at the South Dakota State Penitentiary before joining the sheriff’s office in June 2024. The attorney general’s office has noted that this shooting marks the fifth such incident involving law enforcement in South Dakota this year.
Flowers and tributes surround Deputy Frank’s patrol vehicle in Sioux Falls as the community remembers her service and sacrifice. In her final act, Frank became an organ donor, continuing to serve the community even after her passing. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley expressed his condolences, urging that Frank’s courage and service not be forgotten.
