Actress Hayden Panettiere was found unconscious in her Greenville, South Carolina home on the afternoon of August 16. Her death was confirmed at the scene despite attempts at resuscitation, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. She was 36 years old.
Zach Hickerson, the brother of Panettiere’s boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, discovered her alongside Brian. A 911 call revealed Zach attempted CPR under guidance from the emergency operator. They explored the possibility of using a defibrillator, but one was not confirmed available in the building.
An autopsy determined her death was accidental, caused by the toxic effects of several drugs including fentanyl and alprazolam, among others. Zach Hickerson later shared with TMZ that Brian gave Panettiere Narcan in an effort to reverse a potential opioid overdose after finding her unconscious.
“I really wanted to share with the world that they don’t have to be afraid… They can be imperfect,” Panettiere said in an interview with CBS News’ Gayle King.
Panettiere was known for her roles in “Remember the Titans,” “Heroes,” and “Nashville.” She had openly discussed her battle with substance abuse, sharing her struggles with opioids and alcohol since her teens. Her 2026 memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” detailed her experiences with addiction and recovery.
In May, Panettiere emphasized the importance of sharing her story to help others. She expressed that she was continually working on herself, stating she was healthier than she had been in a long time, thanks to therapy and self-improvement.
Panettiere’s story underlines the challenges of addiction and the impact of sharing personal struggles to inspire change and awareness.
