Researchers in Italy have identified a possible link between Cialis (tadalafil), a common erectile dysfunction medication, and muscle regeneration. This was detailed in a study published in the journal Molecular Biology Reports.
The research involved testing Cialis on mouse muscle cells in a laboratory setting. Over a seven-day period, the study observed how the drug impacted muscle cell growth, survival, and development.
Tadalafil Effects on Muscle Cells
Tadalafil was found to enhance the number of muscle precursor cells, which play a role in the initiation of muscle formation. It also improved their survival rates. Additionally, the drug appeared to aid muscle repair by promoting growth and lessening cell death.
While these results are promising, the study noted that tadalafil delayed the maturation of fully developed muscle cells. This implies the drug may support the creation and maintenance of cells involved in muscle regeneration, but it does not increase muscle size and functionality in humans.
The experiment’s limitation lies in its use of mouse models, which may not translate directly to human outcomes. The short duration of the study, only seven days, also means more research is needed to understand long-term effects.

Future Implications and Expert Opinions
Dr. Cristina Antinozzi, co-author of the study and a researcher at the University of Rome Foro Italico, expressed that these findings provide an encouraging perspective on repurposing tadalafil for muscle repair. She emphasized that while the signal is intriguing, it’s not equivalent to proving that Cialis enhances muscle growth or recovery in humans.
Dr. Kien Vuu, a radiologist and founder of VuuMD Performance and Longevity in Los Angeles, not involved in the study, agreed on the significance of the early findings. Tadalafil showed potential in helping muscle precursor cells grow and survive but delayed their conversion into mature muscle fibers.
Successful muscle regeneration requires these cells to mature and form functional tissue, which the study did not confirm. Vuu highlighted that further research incorporating animal studies and eventual human trials is essential before considering clinical applications.
Practical Considerations and Safety
Dr. Vuu pointed out that lifestyle habits such as resistance training, sufficient protein intake, and quality sleep remain the most effective methods for maintaining muscle with age. Tadalafil poses significant risks, like severe blood pressure drops when used with nitrates, so it should not be used for muscle building based on current findings.
