Kendall Kotzmacher’s Advocacy in Women’s Sports
Kendall Kotzmacher, a sophomore at Colorado Christian University, has drawn significant attention and backlash due to her advocacy against transgender athletes in women’s sports. Her decision to speak out has led to some severe consequences, including personal threats and online harassment.
Threats and Safety Concerns
Kotzmacher reported to OutKick that she received a terrifying threat, with someone claiming they would come to her college to harm her. Despite these threats being reported to the authorities, no arrests have been made. Moreover, she has faced a slew of abusive messages urging her self-harm and expressing wishes for her death.
Kotzmacher stated, “I had a person say that they were gonna come to the school and kill me. That one was a little scary.”
The knowledge that strangers are aware of her college location contributes significantly to her fears. She expressed concern over potential intrusions at her school and has focused on protecting her supportive teammates from similar backlash.
Teammate Support and Advocacy Efforts
Her teammates have been unwavering in their support despite the backlash Kotzmacher has received. When she offered to dissociate their names from her advocacy to spare them backlash, they declined and emphasized their collective support.
“We’re in this together. We’re going to be supportive of you,” Kotzmacher recalled her teammates saying.
Kotzmacher transferred from Western Michigan University due to lack of coaching support and academic pressure. She has balanced her college commitments with a growing public role in sports eligibility debates while practicing four days a week and attending classes daily.
Public Profile and Legislative Involvement
Her advocacy began in response to a Minnesota state semifinals game where a transgender pitcher contributed to a team’s victory. Kotzmacher has since attended Capitol Hill news conferences and criticized limited participation from Democratic senators in hearings related to fairness for female athletes. Her advocacy extends to her voting plans in favor of Michele Tafoya, a Republican Senate nominee supporting restrictions on transgender participation in female sports.
“I think the biggest thing is that I haven’t lost my voice yet,” Kotzmacher noted, emphasizing the importance of using one’s platform for change.
Acknowledgment and Challenges
Despite the adversities, Kotzmacher received recognition from XX-XY Athletics as a Courage Wins Champion. This award honors female athletes taking firm stands for fairness and safety, offering financial support and leadership programs. She acknowledged losing friends due to her advocacy but appreciated the recognition and continued to speak out.
Jackson Thompson, a sports reporter for Fox News Digital, covers political and cultural issues in sports and has included Kotzmacher’s story as part of his ongoing reports.
