Actress Amanda Seyfried shared insights during a conversation with Alec Baldwin at the Hamptons International Film Festival in East Hampton, New York, regarding her decision to decline roles that involve frequent sex scenes. Seyfried expressed growing discomfort with performing intimate scenes as she ages.
I passed on a show where I would have to have sex all the time because of the sex. Doesn’t matter [who it’s with]… I don’t want to do it. I’m uncomfortable with it. I’m not into it right now,
Seyfried explained, as reported by People Magazine.
This stance reflects similar concerns voiced by other actresses. Gina Gershon told Fox News Digital she rejected a lead role in the 1981 horror film Friday the 13th Part 2 due to a topless scene, describing it as exploitative.
Seyfried also discussed the pressure she felt in her early career to conform to uncomfortable situations for fear of upsetting people or losing her job.
During a 2022 interview with Porter magazine, she recounted participating in scenes without underwear at just 19 years old, attributing it to the desire to maintain her career.
Motherhood has altered Seyfried’s approach to personal and professional boundaries, reinforcing her willingness to refuse uncomfortable circumstances. Other actresses, such as Christina Ricci and Keira Knightley, have shared similar experiences. Ricci revealed on The View she was once threatened with legal action for refusing to perform a sex scene a certain way. Knightley incorporated a no-nudity clause in her contracts, giving her greater control over intimate content.
Hollywood has implemented safeguards for actors filming intimate scenes. Jessica Steinrock, an intimacy coordinator, explained the role in ensuring safety and consent during production. HBO’s commitment since 2018 to include intimacy coordinators underscores their importance.
SAG-AFTRA’s guidelines mandate advance notice for expected nudity or simulated sex acts, while producers must provide written nudity riders at least 48 hours before filming. The union also established a collective bargaining agreement covering intimacy coordinators by 2025.
Seyfried, a mother of two, further emphasized how being a parent influences her decisions, making her less of a pushover.
