U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar is currently facing federal investigations into both her financial disclosures and immigration history. This development comes after Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents raided her residence in Washington, D.C., as part of an ongoing criminal investigation related to her immigration paperwork.
Financial Inquiry
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed that her office is reviewing congressional disclosures involving businesses owned by Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett. President Donald Trump has renewed criticisms of Omar, labeling her a “terrible person” and “terrible congresswoman.” However, he refrains from taking a position on whether Omar should be deported following the raid.
Omar, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Somalia, faces reelection amid this scrutiny. She has denied any wrongdoing and accused the Trump administration of using federal law enforcement for political motives. Omar stated on X, “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.” No charges have been filed against her concerning these investigations.
Second Investigation Confirmation
Jeanine Pirro confirmed the financial investigation during an appearance on Fox News’ America Reports. She asserted that the facts would guide the inquiry, regardless of decisions made by the House. The financial disclosures, previously listing Omar and her husband as holding assets between $6 million and $30 million, were later amended by Omar’s team, citing accounting errors. The Office of Congressional Conduct previously reviewed these allegations, recommending the House Ethics Committee dismiss them.
Omar now faces scrutiny from both the criminal investigation connected to the raid and the financial inquiry. Officials have not publicly confirmed any connection between the investigations.
Following Pirro’s confirmation, Trump suggested on Truth Social that Omar had benefited from fraud in Minnesota, without providing evidence. Omar’s team referred to the prior congressional conduct review in response to the financial investigation.
Details of the HSI Raid
Federal agents conducted a search before dawn on October 12 at Omar’s residence. The operation, part of an ongoing criminal investigation, involved a judicially authorized search warrant listing immigration offenses such as false statements and fraud, alongside a conspiracy charge. HSI, the investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, led the search. The details concerning the scope of the investigation have not been publicly disclosed.
The timing of the raid, occurring weeks before midterm elections, raises concerns about potential partisan interference, as the Justice Department usually avoids investigating political candidates close to elections.
Trump’s Rally Comments
At a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, Trump launched an attack on Omar, questioning her right to invoke the U.S. Constitution due to her Somali origins. His comments targeted Somalia and its people, resulting in the crowd chanting “deport.” Omar, as the first Somali American elected to Congress, has been a frequent critic’s target.
Despite Trump’s statements, Vice President JD Vance indicated no prior notice of the search. He emphasized that any investigation would follow credible allegations but would not pursue baseless cases.
Potential Deportation Concerns
Omar entered the U.S. as a refugee and became a naturalized citizen in 2000. Allegations regarding her marriage to her brother have circulated but remain unproven. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin mentioned active investigations into her immigration history, suggesting possible illegal activities.
Omar’s naturalized citizen status means her case differs from standard deportation proceedings for noncitizens. Trump has not expressed a definitive position on her removal from the country.
