Joel Castillo from Yorkville experienced an extraordinary recovery after surviving a car accident on Interstate 88 last March. Amazingly, he returned to play football this fall, performing impressively as a wide receiver and kick returner for the Foxes. Standing 5-foot-9 and weighing 167 pounds, Castillo has not missed a step since his recovery.
Castillo recalled the accident, stating, “I was driving home from a workout in Chicago when a tire smashed through my windshield. It’s by the grace of God that I’m here. Actually, that we’re both here.” His friend, Lincoln Ijams, who is now a freshman receiver at Butler and was traveling with Castillo, was also in the car. The tire detached from another vehicle in the fast lane heading to Chicago, while Castillo was in the fast lane headed home. Despite the collision, both escaped with minor injuries, though there was significant glass damage and bleeding.
However, Castillo’s injuries were more serious than initially described. He lost a front tooth, endured a broken jaw, and suffered a severe concussion, which affected his class schedule and most of his summer training. “I was out for a couple of months,” Castillo explained, noting issues with his neck, body, and back. Now, aside from the missing tooth, he has bounced back.
On a recent Friday, Castillo played an essential role in helping Yorkville secure a 21-7 victory at home against Oswego East. He returned a 96-yard kickoff for a touchdown, breaking a scoreless halftime tie. Additionally, Castillo made a 22-yard catch on a critical fourth-and-13, leading to another touchdown, and contributed with an 11-yard diving reception for the final score, all from quarterback Quintin Rink. Castillo remarked on the pivotal fourth-down play, “Coach told me to get to the sticks, and I did.” His coach, Dan McGuire, praised his performance, describing Castillo as an explosive and vital asset to the team.
Yorkville’s Joel Castillo has achieved impressive statistics, with 29 receptions for 498 yards and three touchdowns, alongside 375 yards in kick returns. Castillo has expressed a desire to play at the next level and has been passionate about football since age six, although his recruiting prospects have dimmed due to the accident. Still, he is determined to finish the season strong.
Lincoln Ijams managed to notify Castillo’s mother, Holly, about the accident before the police arrived. She recalls the distressing moment, stating, “It’s the scariest phone call you’ll ever get.” Despite the severity of the crash, she considers their survival with minor injuries miraculous.
Before the accident, Castillo had eight college visits planned but only attended one due to subsequent oral surgery and appointments. A permanent bridge is scheduled after football season. Holly credited McGuire for ensuring her son, an honor roll student, completed his junior year. Although Castillo had to take a summer class, McGuire’s support was crucial.
Reflecting on his journey, Castillo and his friend Ijams trained with a reputable trainer. He says, “I’ve always believed, ‘If you want to be the best, train with the best.’” Despite a challenging period, Castillo is grateful to play this season.
