The White House has reacted strongly to comments made by The Chicks’ lead singer, Natalie Maines, following her remarks about President Donald Trump. Maines’ criticism included a personal attack that led the White House to call her a ‘despicable nobody’ with a ‘peanut-sized brain.’ This response was shared with Fox News Digital.
Maines, along with bandmates Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire, began their anniversary tour for ‘Taking the Long Way’ in Manhattan. During the show, Maines revisited her previous criticism of former President George W. Bush, a statement that ignited controversy over 20 years ago. This time, however, she hinted that she would prefer Bush over Trump. She acknowledged the backlash from her 2003 comments but now joked that she would gladly welcome Bush back.
‘We thought that was the worst it could get,’ said Maines, referring to her 2003 statements. ‘Now I’d give George (W.) Bush a big wet kiss,’ she laughed, expressing her embarrassment that the current President of the United States is ‘from the United States.’
In 2003, Maines criticized Bush saying, ‘Just so you know, we do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.’ These previous comments led to a mixed reaction from the public and music industry professionals.
Online reactions varied, with some social media users expressing fatigue over celebrities giving political opinions during performances. Many wanted to focus on enjoying the music without a political agenda.
Despite negative feedback, several fans supported The Chicks’ decision to speak out. As one supporter expressed on Instagram, ‘It was the correct thing to say back then and is definitely the correct thing to say now. Bravo Chicks.’
Maines had previously sparked controversy in May by posting a profanity-laden rant against Trump on Instagram. Her post accused him of undermining democracy. The White House issued a similar statement in response, calling the singer a ‘despicable nobody.’ The representative for Maines has not responded to requests for comment.
