President Donald Trump promoted significant investments in the energy and semiconductor sectors, aiming to emphasize his economic strategy just before an Arizona midterm rally. These efforts come amidst ongoing voter dissatisfaction over living costs.
Trump revealed Taiwan’s commitment to purchasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) valued between $70 billion and $80 billion from the proposed Alaska LNG project over twenty years. Additionally, Taiwan plans to invest up to $4.4 billion in project development.
Separately, Trump announced a $21 billion investment by semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries to construct two manufacturing facilities in Malta, New York, with financial backing from Japan.
These announcements on Truth Social coincide with Trump facing substantial voter dismay over economic conditions. An Associated Press-NORC poll indicated that only 17% of U.S. adults approved of Trump’s management of living costs. A Reuters/Ipsos survey found around 78% attributed rising prices to Trump administration policies, including tariffs and tensions with Iran.
The Labor Department reported inflation increased in September. Consumer prices rose 0.6% from August and 3.7% from the previous year, slightly higher than August’s 3.4%. Core inflation, excluding food and energy, grew by 0.3% for the month and 2.6% annually. Gasoline prices surged 9.1% in September, driving more than half of the monthly rises.
Despite these challenges, Trump framed the investment announcements as proof his trade policies yield major developments and jobs in the U.S.
The Taiwan commitment accounts for about 30% of the project’s output over two decades. Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs confirmed state-owned CPC Corp.’s plans to acquire 6 million metric tons of LNG annually and potentially invest up to $4.4 billion. Yet, they clarified specific investment terms remain subject to negotiations and commercial contracts.
Reuters noted no binding sale-and-purchase agreement has been confirmed. The ministry underscored that investment details, equity stakes, and related terms depend on future negotiations.
Trump also mentioned South Korea’s previously stated $50 billion infrastructure investment, although Seoul has not finalized its Alaska project participation.
The GlobalFoundries initiative is expected to generate 27,000 jobs in construction and supply chains, alongside over 1,000 skilled manufacturing jobs in New York. These roles link to two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Malta, near Albany.
Trump labeled the Alaska LNG project as “the GREATEST Project in Alaska History,” asserting its success relies on him in office. He described the New York investment as an “ALL-AROUND HUGE WIN FOR AMERICA,” emphasizing his role as a “great Businessman President” managing “the Greatest Economy in the World.”
