Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to re-establish Ukraine’s full access to the Starlink and Starshield satellite networks. This request comes nearly a week after Ukrainian forces reported speed reductions on drones targeting Russian positions.
Zelensky highlighted a significant conversation with Rubio, discussing Ukraine’s pressing need for interceptor missiles to counter Russian ballistic attacks, issues with satellite network speeds, and missile launch alerts from Russia. Ukrainian drone pilots found that their unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) could travel only half as fast as before, limiting their ability to strike Russian positions up to 125 miles from the frontline before interception.
Officials in Kyiv noted a restriction in their connection to Elon Musk’s Starshield, a military-grade version of Starlink. Additionally, the usual intelligence data on Russian missile attacks was disrupted. Although intelligence sharing has reportedly resumed, Zelensky’s concerns highlight Ukraine’s reliance on U.S. support against Russia.
Rubio refuted claims of a halt in intelligence sharing by the U.S. government, asserting the U.S. was not behind the restrictions on satellite networks. Musk noted that the U.S. government controls Starshield, implying military decisions dictate speed limits.
Starshield and Starlink are pivotal for Ukraine’s early warning systems concerning Russian missile launches. A message from inside the White House reportedly pushed for speed restrictions, but details remain scant. This follows previous disruptions in intelligence sharing aimed at promoting peace talks.
Zelensky acknowledged decisions on satellite connections hold implications, as efforts continue to convey Ukraine’s stance on Russian aggression. With no current substitute for these networks, Zelensky pledged discussions with allies to address these limitations. Reinstating prior settings for satellite networks is deemed essential for Ukraine’s defense strategy.
