Rep. Keith Self, a Republican from Texas, has attributed the ongoing riots in French cities to mass migration, suggesting the United States might face similar issues in the future. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Self emphasized his lack of surprise regarding the violent incidents and expressed concerns about the long-term consequences.
Self stated that France had allowed these issues to develop over many years, resulting in the current situation. He warned that the U.S. is witnessing its future in the events unfolding in France and the U.K.
Self serves as the chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe in the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He also co-founded the Sharia-Free America Caucus along with Rep. Chip Roy. This group has faced criticism from Democrats due to allegations of Islamophobia and condemnation from the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations.
“They’ve got, what, 7% now are Muslims in France? And when you reach that percentage — and very concentrated in some large cities — that gives you the tipping point that everybody talks about,” Self claimed.
Statistics from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies in France indicate that Islam ranks as the second-most practiced religion among those aged 18 to 59, following Catholicism.
Discussing the cultural implications of migration, Self remarked on the significance of preserving a Christian heritage in France. He expressed concern over France’s struggles with cultural assimilation stemming from diverse immigrant populations.
The riots, characterized by looting and destruction, have spanned multiple days with French authorities blaming far-left groups for heightening tensions related to living costs and education expenses.
Rep. Self argued that France is experiencing an open “civil war,” suggesting that military intervention would be crucial to prevent losing cultural integrity in urban areas.
Regarding President Emmanuel Macron’s position, Self speculated that Macron stepping down could be beneficial for France, but ultimately left the decision to him. He maintained the current chaos should not impact the U.S.-France relationship.
Self advocated for U.S. support in intelligence gathering about the protests, emphasizing France’s importance as an ally. While acknowledging President Trump’s attempts to encourage France, Self urged that now is not the time to abandon the ally.
Recent riots have resulted in over 1,800 arrests nationwide in France, including more than 800 in Paris. Amid the unrest, images of protesters displaying Algerian, Palestinian, and Moroccan flags have fueled discussions about immigration policies.
The Louvre Museum has announced temporary closure due to the protests, underscoring the broader impact of the ongoing turmoil.
