An elderly man in Mississippi was shot and killed with his own firearm during a struggle with an alleged burglar inside his residence. His wife managed to escape the incident, as reported by authorities.
Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards informed Fox News Digital of the incident, stating that Eric Basco broke into the home of Bobby McGill around 4 a.m. on Thursday. McGill and his wife were asleep at the time.
McGill, aged 81, engaged in a struggle with Basco, who seized McGill’s gun and fatally shot him multiple times, according to Edwards.
“It appears that there was a struggle between the assailant and the homeowner. McGill had a pistol stored in his chest at the foot of his bed,” Edwards explained. “Our assessment suggests McGill may have attempted to get the pistol, but during the fight, Basco secured the gun and shot Mr. Bobby multiple times.”
Peggy McGill, Bobby’s wife, successfully escaped the scene and contacted 911, reporting the intrusion and attack on her husband.
Edwards suggested burglary as Basco’s motive, revealing that Basco later shot himself in a bathroom. He passed away in the hospital.
Investigators accessed a video from the evening before the incident, depicting Basco walking about 1.5 miles from McGill’s home, yelling phrases that resembled “God is dead.” Edwards emphasized that this possible statement was not confirmed, but it directed some investigative questions towards Basco’s mental state.
“There was a cross in Mr. Bobby’s yard and a ‘Jesus is Lord’ sign, but we don’t know if this influenced the incident,” Edwards noted. “It was a senseless tragedy.”
The sheriff mentioned Basco lacked a criminal history beyond minor traffic offenses, hinting at possible mental health issues or altered thinking.
According to family accounts, Bobby McGill was a devoted Christian deeply committed to his family and faith. A tribute posted by his granddaughter on Facebook portrayed him as a man who embodied his faith through actions and conversation.
“My Papaw loved the Lord above all else and he loved his family with his whole heart. His faith became sight this morning,” she expressed. “We are fortunate for the hope of eternity, ensuring we might see him again. Please pray for our family in the coming days.”
