Ohio State’s head coach Ryan Day announced a challenging update for the Buckeyes. Quarterback Julian Sayin will be out of play for an unspecified duration due to a shoulder injury. Initially, Sayin was expected to be sidelined for “several weeks” after injuring his throwing shoulder during Ohio State’s 19-15 victory over Indiana.
The timeframe for Sayin’s recovery has now become uncertain. Day indicated that the Buckeyes are preparing as if Sayin will not return for the remainder of the regular season. His absence may even extend through the College Football Playoff.
“We’re not going to set any timeline on his recovery, but he is out indefinitely,” Day informed reporters. “We aim to give Julian and his family privacy during this process. Given the injury’s nature, we’re planning for his non-availability for both the regular season and postseason.”
Luke Fahey, a true freshman, stepped in during the last quarter of the game following Sayin’s injury. Fahey is set to continue as the team’s starter. This change comes as Ohio State enjoys a bye week before they travel to face No. 16 USC on Halloween.
Discussing the team’s strategy, Day remarked, “With Luke playing, we might need to adjust our approach slightly, but the bye week offers us time to regroup and strategize.”
Julian Sayin suffered the injury after a hit by Hoosiers defender Mario Landino. The impact caused Sayin to fumble and led him to leave the field for medical attention. Although specifics of the injury are unknown, Day’s comments suggest its severity might prevent Sayin from returning this season.
Sayin, an anticipated top NFL Draft prospect, has thrown for 1,772 yards with 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions this year.
With Sayin sidelined, Fahey, a three-star recruit from California, will shoulder the responsibility of maintaining Ohio State’s standing as the No. 3 team in college football.
Coach Day expressed confidence in Fahey’s potential, stating, “He’s confident, athletic, and competitive. The moment didn’t overawe him.”
