Mel Brooks, despite reaching the age of 100, insisted on being part of the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel without delay. He made a clear request: film his scenes immediately.
“We filmed ‘Spaceballs: The New One,’ which Mel Brooks was heavily involved in. He has already filmed his parts,” Daphne Zuniga disclosed during a panel at the ‘Melrose Place’ 90s Con. “Mel said, ‘You should film me now because I’m 100.'”
The much-anticipated sequel will feature returning characters alongside fresh faces. Zuniga announced the release date as April 23rd of the following year. Rick Moranis will reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet, and Bill Pullman returns as Princess Vespa’s husband. Lewis Pullman, Bill’s son, will take on the role of their son, the prince. Additionally, Keke Palmer joins the cast.
The original ‘Spaceballs’ premiered in 1987. Brooks, who was in his early 60s at the time, co-wrote and produced the comedy. The story centers around Lone Starr (played by Bill Pullman) and his sidekick Barf (John Candy), who aim to rescue Princess Vespa from the villainous Dark Helmet and President Skroob. The movie parodies various science-fiction classics, including ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Star Trek.’
Brooks has recounted amusing anecdotes from the making of the first film. He shared that Rick Moranis caused numerous takes to be ruined due to the crew’s laughter. Moranis’ entrance in his oversized helmet with the line, “I can’t breathe in this thing,” became a classic. Brooks himself found it difficult not to laugh during these moments.
Rick Moranis reflected on reprising his role nearly four decades later, during a San Diego Comic-Con panel. Working with both his former co-stars and a new generation of actors felt surreal. He remarked that he was their age when the original film was made. Donning Dark Helmet’s costume again was a strange experience for Moranis but also refreshing and enjoyable.
