The United Kingdom is taking measures to fortify Saudi Arabia’s defenses by dispatching RAF Typhoon jets to counter missile and drone threats originating from the Iranian-supported Houthi rebels.
Defense Strategy
On Tuesday, U.K. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized that the deployment of the jets serves a defensive purpose. The aircraft will not engage in offensive operations against the rebel forces. Alongside the jets, the U.K. is also providing military advisers and an RAF A400M transport aircraft. These resources will aid in moving defense equipment throughout Saudi Arabia.
Background of the Conflict
The decision aligns with recent developments from the Houthis, who admitted to launching two attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on October 10 and 11. These attacks resulted in 13 fatalities and injuries to 308 individuals.
The Houthis are part of a conflict involving Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which receives backing from Riyadh. The civil war has led to significant regional instability.
