Record Early Voting Numbers in Texas
Two Democratic strongholds in Texas, Harris and Dallas counties, have reported record early voting numbers. This signifies an encouraging trend for the Democratic party in parts of the state critical to their electoral success.
Harris County, which includes Houston, broke its record for first-day turnout in a midterm election. By 3:30 p.m. on Monday, more than 70,000 voters had been processed, surpassing the previous record set in 2018. Despite the increase, the number of registered voters has risen by 14.7 percent compared to 2018.
Dallas County also saw unprecedented numbers, with 76,069 voters casting their votes on the first day. This marks a 25.6 percent rise from the previous record set in 2020.
Texas Senate and Gubernatorial Contests
In the Senate race, Democratic candidate James Talarico emerges as a serious contender, showing a slight lead over Republican Ken Paxton in recent polls. Talarico has garnered support from major Texas newspapers, endorsing his candidacy due to Paxton’s history of scandals.
Incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott faces a competitive race against Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa. Polls indicate a narrowing gap, with Hinojosa closing within two points of Abbott’s lead.
Republicans Urge Voter Turnout in Rural Areas
Republicans are focusing efforts on rural and suburban voter turnout to counter the Democratic stronghold in urban areas. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick emphasizes the importance of rural America in maintaining GOP’s dominance.
Conservative commentator Mark Levin stresses the significance of mobilizing Republican voters, warning that demographic changes and Democratic organizing threaten the GOP’s longstanding control in Texas.
Impact of Outside Spending and Campaign Efforts
Concerns over potential Democratic victories in Texas have led to over $158 million in outside spending by Republican leadership. Former President Trump has actively engaged in rallying support for the Republican candidates.
Texas is poised to be a pivotal battleground, with the outcome of the elections having the potential to shift the balance of power in Washington.
