President Donald Trump’s political impact extends beyond the United States, influencing Latin American countries’ shift towards right-leaning leadership. Brazil emerges as a significant test of these changes. Marcelo Sandrin, an Argentine-born Trump supporter now living in the U.S., perceives this shift as unmistakable, attributing substantial credit to Trump.
Speaking near the T. Ed Garrison Arena in Clemson, Sandrin highlighted Argentine President Javier Milei and Brazil’s potential rightward shift as evidence of Trump’s growing influence. The Trump administration has also actively asserted U.S. power in the region, notably with the capture of Venezuelan socialist leader Nicolás Maduro.
Trump deserves a lot of credit,Sandrin told Fox News Digital. He described Milei as a forceful libertarian and advocate for small government. Sandrin noted that during Trump’s era, South America moved more to the right.
In Argentina, Milei has become one of Trump’s key ideological allies, pushing for extensive economic reforms. He challenges the left-wing establishment that has historically dominated the country. Brazil’s political future, with former President Jair Bolsonaro’s allies seeking to reclaim leadership, serves as another test of the region’s trajectory.
Beyond elections, Trump’s administration has influenced the region, notably through the U.S. capture of Maduro. Santiago Vidal Calvo, a researcher at the Manhattan Institute, argued this reinforced Washington’s influence and weakened Maduro’s political order.
Calvo noted the U.S. administration’s impact went beyond ideology, affecting immigration, trade, and national security. He observed how China gained influence in Latin America through loans, contrasting North American banking practices, giving it sway over domestic affairs.
Despite these trends, the shift is not uniform. Mexico remains governed by the left-wing Morena movement, and Uruguay aligns with the left, counterpoints to Trump’s regional allies. Calvo also praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his role in shaping U.S. strategy in Latin America, seeing it as an underappreciated foreign policy success.
