The United States is experiencing its worst measles resurgence in decades, with Pennsylvania particularly hard-hit. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals over 4,580 measles cases nationwide since October 22, more than double the 2025 total.
According to the CDC, 96% of those infected in 2026 were either unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status. Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak has intensified, prompting officials to encourage vaccination. The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports at least 1,338 confirmed cases across 44 counties this year, with 21 new cases recorded by October 21. More than 250 individuals required hospitalization, and 5 fatalities occurred, with 3 from Lancaster County.
Local Amish communities in Lancaster and Mifflin counties, known for low vaccination rates, are hit hard. Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen conducted a roundtable with Mifflin County healthcare providers, highlighting the importance of gathering insights from those directly caring for affected communities.
Health officials emphasize vaccination as a key preventive measure against measles. The CDC states that two doses of the MMR vaccine are nearly 97% effective, while one dose offers about 93% protection. Pennsylvania healthcare providers report increased interest in vaccination, with over 39,000 doses administered in the first three weeks of October, surpassing the typical monthly 25,000.
In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul declared a disaster emergency due to rising measles cases, with over 160 confirmed as of October 20. Utah reported over 700 diagnoses this year, though no new cases in the last three weeks. South Carolina’s earlier outbreak accounted for at least 997 cases in 2026, ending in April.
