The Miami Dolphins, renowned for their historic 17-0 season, avoided a winless 2026 campaign with a victory against the New York Jets. Under new head coach Jeff Hafley, the team was determined to prevent a disastrous 0-17 run and secured their first win with a 28-25 triumph at MetLife Stadium.
Victory Seals a New Beginning
Hafley’s team sidestepped a potential six-game losing streak, a first since 2019. Quarterback Malik Willis played a crucial role, scoring both through the air and on the ground. This performance came just after their bye week, showcasing a renewed energy on the field.
Willis connected with rookie Caleb Douglas, who recently returned from injury, for a seven-yard touchdown. Running back Ollie Gordon also contributed, filling in admirably for the injured De’Von Achane, and capping a 14-play drive that set the score to 14-7 in Miami’s favor.
Jets’ Late Rally Falls Short
The Jets, led by quarterback Geno Smith, aimed to bounce back from a 2-4 start. Smith made a striking 52-yard pass to Omar Cooper Jr., and tight end Mason Taylor tied the game at seven points with an impressive catch.
However, Miami led 21-7 by halftime, thanks to Willis scoring on a two-yard sprint just before the break. Despite a late comeback attempt by the Jets, including another Taylor touchdown and a two-point conversion, Miami maintained their lead. Willis secured the win with a crucial fourth-and-1 conversion.
Dolphins Aim to Rebuild Season
Though a long path to the playoffs remains, the Dolphins have lifted a significant psychological burden with this win. Meanwhile, the Jets, now 2-5, face ongoing challenges despite a strong start. Smith completed 23 of 30 attempts for 287 yards, showcasing both their strengths and inconsistencies.
