Amman, Jordan — Jordanian security forces have arrested three men in connection with a deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church. The assault, which occurred during a funeral in the village of Hammoud, Karak, resulted in nine fatalities and injuries to more than two dozen individuals.
The Public Security Directorate reported that these suspects were detained following a shootout early Monday. Although the suspects were wounded, no injuries were reported among the security personnel involved in the operation south of Amman, Jordan’s capital. Karak, the governorate where the incident took place, is home to a minority Christian community.
The attack transpired on Friday, during a gathering attended by approximately 3,000 people on October 25, 2026, marking the funeral for the victims. Despite the severity of the attack, no group has claimed responsibility. However, Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya identified the captured individuals as the perpetrators.
The security services have fulfilled their duties, resulting in the capture of those who carried out this terrorist act,” Al-Faraya stated on state TV Al-Mamlaka. “They put up fierce resistance against the security forces, but were ultimately subdued and taken into custody, having sustained severe injuries.”
Images from the scene show a bloodstain in Saint George’s Greek Orthodox Church, the location of the gunfire attack. The suspects, according to the minister, were identified soon after the attack, allowing security services to employ all necessary means for their capture.
The directorate emphasized the joint effort to maintain public safety, stating that “Terrorism has no place among us,” while ensuring that the suspects had faced their “just fate.” No connections to Islamist militant groups have been disclosed.
In response to the attack, King Abdullah II instructed authorities to act decisively against those he described as “outlaws of Islam” and any attempts to threaten the unity of Jordan’s people.
