Former President Barack Obama is increasingly backing socialist and socialist-aligned Democrats, as this faction grows in influence within the Democratic Party. The Democratic Socialists of America have seen multiple primary victories this year, indicating the rising power of the left wing before the midterm elections.
While Obama is not endorsing every socialist candidate, he supports several progressives to strengthen Democratic unity.
Democratic strategist Kevin Walling describes Obama as a key figure whose endorsement remains sought after by many candidates. Walling emphasizes Obama’s understanding of the varied political landscapes within the U.S., which enables him to unite diverse political figures under the Democratic coalition.
“President Obama remains the most popular figure in Democratic politics and a kingmaker,” Walling stated.
Recently, Obama supported Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, and Florida Senate nominee Angie Nixon. El-Sayed, although not a self-identified democratic socialist, supports progressive policies, including Medicare for All.
During a Michigan rally, Obama defended Democrats’ healthcare policies, challenging critics who claim the party has shifted too far left. His remarks sparked online discussions revisiting his own landmark healthcare policy, Obamacare.
Obama praised Nixon for her advocacy for a $15 minimum wage and her opposition to Republican-backed redistricting, describing her as a tenacious leader. Nixon campaigns on policies like Medicare for All, universal childcare, and tax increases for the wealthy.
Obama also engaged with James Talarico in Texas, who emphasizes economic populism and universal health care, despite not identifying as a socialist.
Obama’s involvement includes support for candidates like Zohran Mamdani, a democrat socialist candidate for New York City mayor in 2025.
Democratic strategist Mally Smith defends Obama’s actions as efforts to build a broad Democratic coalition without endorsing every progressive policy.
“President Obama is the most popular politician in America,” Smith said, noting his broad support among Democrats.
At a campaign event in Kansas, former President Trump criticized Obama’s support for progressive candidates. Trump dismissed Obama’s campaign efforts as ineffective.
Obama’s campaign activity illustrates an effort to unify diverse Democrat candidates. Walling highlights Obama’s focus on candidates’ electability rather than their place within the party wings.
“The former president doesn’t ask which wing of the party a nominee comes from,” Walling noted.
