Could Robert Griffin III Lead Baylor Bears as Head Coach?

Robert Griffin III has expressed a strong interest in becoming the head football coach for the Baylor Bears. During an appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show,” Griffin stated his willingness to take on the role “100%” if given the opportunity.

Griffin emphasized the need for someone who understands what it takes to win at Baylor and have a team that fans can be proud of. As a Heisman Trophy winner at Baylor in 2011, Griffin knows firsthand the significance of success for both the university and the community.

“If Baylor wants to get back to winning and have a university that isn’t just respectable on the football field, they need people who know what it looks like to win at Baylor,” Griffin said.

Griffin, also a former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst, discussed his interest with Baylor’s athletic director, Doug McNamee. He described McNamee as someone who also knows what winning at Baylor entails.

Baylor is currently in the midst of a coaching search to replace Dave Aranda. It remains uncertain if Griffin will be considered, but his successful history with the Bears positions him as a notable figure in Baylor athletics. Griffin’s career with the Bears ended with a noteworthy 10-3 season, including a win in the Alamo Bowl.

Despite his achievements, Griffin has never coached at any level, which makes his candidacy intriguing. His post-NFL career led him into sports media, initially at ESPN and later with FOX, covering both college and professional football.

Baylor hired Aranda after Griffin’s NFL career concluded. Aranda’s start was promising, especially after a 12-2 season in 2021. However, the team’s recent performances have led to a change in leadership. Joe Klanderman has taken over as interim head coach after the team parted ways with Aranda.
