The 2026 Oregon Ducks football season continues to face setbacks. Head coach Dan Lanning confirmed that quarterback Dante Moore will not return this season. Moore suffered a concussion during a game against USC on September 28 when linebacker Desman Stephens hit him in the head as Moore attempted to slide.
Despite returning to practice with his team in recent weeks, Moore has not been cleared to play in games. Lanning explained, “We got clarity this past week. Dante wants to play, but we control practice settings differently than live game environments. He’s expected to fully recover, but he won’t be on the field for us at this time.”
“This is not about Dante giving up on the team,” emphasized Lanning. “He’s actively participating as the scout team quarterback, and his absence is a safety precaution, not a decision rooted in the team’s current standing.”
Before his concussion, Moore had passed for 925 yards and nine touchdowns without any interceptions. Speculation that Moore’s absence was related to Oregon’s three-loss record was dismissed by Lanning. Moore continues to contribute to the team’s practice performance.
The Ducks, now preparing for life without Moore, have lost two additional games to Oklahoma State and Illinois in Moore’s absence. Their offensive struggles led to the dismissal of offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer. Oregon has struggled to establish a rushing attack and has faced challenges in the passing game with backup quarterbacks. Lanning highlighted Oregon’s offensive issues after a 17-15 loss to UCLA and a 21-10 loss to Illinois.
Looking ahead, Moore’s focus will shift to recovery in anticipation of the NFL Draft. He is projected as a first-round pick next April. Fans had hoped for a promising season, but with the team currently at 4-3, postseason prospects have dimmed.
The Ducks must navigate several challenges in the coming months, including roster rebuilding for 2027 and preparing to play Northwestern this weekend. Dylan Raiola’s transfer from Nebraska is expected to provide depth and competition at quarterback for the future.
