Protests and Vandalism in New York City
Recent events in New York City have seen significant disruptions caused by activists. Anti-ICE protesters blocked the Brooklyn Bridge, creating traffic chaos, while a vandalism incident occurred at the 9/11 Memorial.
Brooklyn Bridge Protest
A group protesting against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) blocked the entrances to the Brooklyn Bridge. The demonstration led to significant traffic delays, frustrating many commuters. Videos captured drivers pleading with protesters to allow passage, with some expressing a desire simply to get to work. The protesters used megaphones to voice their messages, equating the NYPD and ICE with oppressive organizations.
One protester shouted support for Oscar Bergal, following a recent ICE shooting incident involving an illegal immigrant in Manhattan. The protest commenced at 12:30 PM and resulted in an hour-long delay before police intervened, arresting 14 individuals.
9/11 Memorial Vandalism
In another incident, Johnathan Tijerina was arrested for allegedly vandalizing the 9/11 Memorial. He reportedly sprayed a message on the memorial, calling attention to issues related to gun violence. His group, “Just Stop Killing Kids,” shared a video of the act, demanding political action on gun control, such as Universal Background Checks and a National Gun Registry.
The Port Authority Police confirmed the arrest, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum has restored the affected area. The institution emphasized the importance of the memorial as a site for remembering the victims of the terrorist attacks in 2001 and 1993.
