Tensions Rise at Florida Meeting Over Mosque Expansion
In a recent Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners meeting, a woman wearing a burka was asked to leave after playing a recording of the Islamic call to prayer. This incident happened during a public comment period when residents voiced concerns about the potential expansion of a local mosque.
The woman, covered entirely in black with only one eye visible, approached the podium and played the recording instead of speaking. Board Chairman Dave Eggers interrupted, stating that county rules require verbal comments. “Ma’am, you’re going to have to stop … stop the music, stop the tape,” said Eggers.
When she refused, a deputy from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office escorted her out. This action led to tension in the room, with audience members voicing their displeasure. Eggers reminded the audience to maintain decorum and explained, “We don’t allow taped things. You can record the meeting, but we don’t allow taped activity like that.”
The meeting included discussions over a recent 4-3 vote approving a land-use change for the expansion of the Masjid Al Rahman mosque. This change allows the building to expand by 1,000 square feet. Some residents protested, citing concerns over women’s rights and Western values. One woman argued, “By allowing this mosque to expand in our area, you are participating in the expansion of a totalitarian ideology.”
However, others supported the mosque, pointing out plans to adjust it for religious reasons, such as facing Mecca. “We have no problems with them. We’ve been their neighbors for many years,” a supporter noted.
Commissioner Vince Nowicki expressed the need for clarity in government documents, questioning why the mosque wasn’t described in straightforward language. He emphasized the importance of clear descriptions for community understanding.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reported that the woman was removed without further incident and will not face charges.
