The Milwaukee Brewers clinched their first franchise championship on Wednesday night, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 of the World Series. Under the leadership of two-time reigning NL Manager of the Year Pat Murphy, the team achieved a historic victory.
First baseman Jake Bauers played a crucial role in the Brewers’ success, earning the NLCS MVP award for his outstanding performance. During the on-field celebration after the win, Bauers handed the game ball from the final out to Murphy, who praised his player.
In his remarks, Murphy made a pointed comment about Bauers’ former team, the New York Yankees. Bauers participated in 84 games for the Yankees in the 2023 season before being traded to Milwaukee in November. As he approaches free agency this offseason, he may be looking at a significant contract and a possible change of scenery.
The 31-year-old Bauers, initially a seventh-round draft pick, had a winding journey early in his career. He played for the Rays in 2018, spent time with Cleveland’s then-Indians in 2019 and 2021, joined the Seattle Mariners in 2021, and then the Yankees in 2023. He ultimately found his stride in Milwaukee over the last three seasons.
Bauers had a standout performance in 2026, achieving personal bests in various offensive categories. He recorded 26 home runs, 86 RBIs, 93 runs scored, and 127 hits. He also drew 94 walks and maintained an OPS of .874. His .266/.389/.484 slash line across 578 plate appearances included the third-best on-base percentage in the league.
The New York Yankees, meanwhile, are navigating a busy offseason following another early playoff exit, losing to the Rays in the ALDS. The team confirmed that both general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone will return for the 2027 season, contingent on the season’s occurrence.
The MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is due to expire on December 1, with a lockout anticipated if negotiations do not conclude favorably.
