Edgar Morin, a renowned French sociologist, anthropologist, ecologist, philosopher, and filmmaker, died in Paris on Friday at the age of 104. His career, marked by a vast array of disciplines and experiences, began as a member of the Resistance during World War II. Known for his deep intellectual insights, Morin remained a significant figure in France until his passing.
President Emmanuel Macron confirmed Morin’s death. In a statement on X, Macron praised him as a “soldier of the Resistance, fighter and free spirit, and a defender of nature and humanity.” Macron described Morin as “humanism personified.”
Morin was the last surviving intellectual shaped by the Nazi occupation of France. This experience lent his writings and public statements a unique moral weight, resonating with the French public. Throughout his life, Morin stayed active on France’s intellectual stage.
His involvement in key historical moments enhanced his credibility. On his 100th birthday in 2021, the French newspaper Libération called him “the grandfather of all the French,” symbolizing the previous century’s collective memory.
Throughout his lifetime, Morin was a prolific writer with nearly 120 books to his name. His final book was published shortly before his death, adding to a body of work that began with his first publication almost eight decades ago. It documented Germany’s destruction after World War II.
His writings covered a wide range of subjects including autobiography, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, epistemology, cinema, biology, ecology, history, and political science. Morin advocated for the convergence of academic disciplines, arguing against their isolation. “I’ve never understood why all this knowledge should be cloistered off,” he once stated in a television interview.
