Serena Williams is making a highly anticipated return to competitive tennis this month. The 44-year-old icon will play doubles at the HSBC Championships in London, nearly four years after her retirement. The tournament celebrated her return with the statement, “THE QUEEN RETURNS.”
Williams announced her intention to compete with great enthusiasm, stating, “I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.” She has secured a spot through a wild card entry in the doubles bracket, which starts on June 8. The Tennis Channel, which will stream the event, described this as a “generational announcement.”
Williams has kept busy as a businesswoman, philanthropist, and mother of two since retiring. While she hasn’t confirmed a return to a full tennis schedule, she remarked that the WTA 500 event is an ideal place to begin a new chapter in her career. The timing excites fans who hope to see her play throughout the summer, with the HSBC Championships often seen as a lead-up to Wimbledon, beginning later in June.
Williams will be a rare wild card at the event, having spent over six years as a WTA World No.1. Her exceptional records include 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most achieved by any woman in the Open era, and several Olympic medals in both singles and doubles competitions.
Her official return follows reports from six months ago when news outlets noted her inclusion in tennis’s anti-doping program, the Registered Testing Pool. This step, managed by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), signaled a potential return despite her statement at the time denying a comeback. Williams joins eight other former No. 1 women’s singles players who resumed their careers after motherhood.
