The NBA playoffs often see the pace of the game slow down. Every minute feels intense as both teams focus on securing each possession. Ultimately, the outcome hinges on which team or player performs best during these crucial moments. In Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks stood out, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter. His efforts led the Knicks to a 105-95 win over the San Antonio Spurs, giving them a 1-0 series lead.
The Spurs struggled to find their rhythm, managing only 19 points in the final period. Brunson’s ability to perform under pressure has earned him recognition as one of the NBA’s top playoff players. Since the 2023 postseason began, Brunson has led in clutch field goal attempts and successes. Clutch scenarios are defined as when the game’s margin is five points or fewer with under five minutes remaining. Brunson’s ability to make plays independently is highlighted by the fact that only 14.8% of his clutch shots have been assisted.
“In the biggest moments, he shows up, and that’s what MVPs are supposed to do,” said Knicks’ head coach Mike Brown. “We put the ball in his hands and trusted him to get it done.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson also praised Brunson, noting, “He’s a skilled player who knows his angles and takes contested shots without rushing. He’s phenomenal.” Despite a tough start in Game 1, including dealing with minor injuries, Brunson excelled in the fourth quarter, finishing with 30 points.
Brunson’s confidence and work ethic were key to his late-game success. “It starts with my confidence and work ethic,” Brunson explained. “Knowing my teammates have my back is crucial, especially when we’re on the road.”
While Brunson thrived, the Spurs faced challenges. San Antonio scored only 40 points in the second half, struggling to create scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter. Victor Wembanyama contributed a brief scoring burst but ultimately finished inefficiently, with 11 points in the final quarter. The Spurs’ overall shooting performance in the fourth was poor, at 28.6%, with De’Aaron Fox unable to stabilize the team.
Though a small single-game sample size can lead to random outcomes, San Antonio’s struggle in clutch moments has been evident in the playoffs. Their offensive rating during these times stands at 96.8 following the Game 1 loss. In contrast, the Knicks have excelled in clutch moments with a 107.7 offensive rating and an 18.5 net rating. Brunson’s consistent ability to generate offense was key to New York’s Game 1 success.
“[Brunson] was the MVP in the second half,” Brown emphasized. “He did what MVP candidates do. He carried us to victory.”
