The FIFA World Cup signage adorns the PATH train station at the World Trade Center in New York on May 27, 2026, in preparation for the upcoming tournament. Running from June 11 to July 19, the World Cup will be hosted in venues across New York City and New Jersey.
Visitors attending the FIFA World Cup matches will experience a revamped transportation system, thanks to numerous upgrades along bus, metro, road, and train networks. These events might coincide with the NBA championship series, involving the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.
During a press conference, Governor Kathy Hochul urged tourists to explore the city even amidst the simultaneous high-profile events. Expressing confidence in New York’s ability to manage such occurrences, she stated, “We can handle this, we got this, this is what we do best.” The Knicks will face the Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 8 and 10, with an additional match if needed on June 16. The first of eight World Cup matches at New York New Jersey Stadium, situated in East Rutherford, N.J., will commence on June 13 with Brazil vs. Morocco.
Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani outlined an array of measures, many executed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority, to accommodate up to 100,000 extra transit riders on game days. “We [normally] handle 6 million riders a day, so this is something within our control,” Hochul assured.
The adjustments include increased bus and subway services, lane closures for smoother passage of buses and emergency vehicles, and restrictions on construction and deliveries in select city areas to ease traffic flow. Mamdani recommended New Yorkers traveling into Midtown Manhattan avoid driving, opting to cycle, use the subway, or walk to reduce road congestion.
Officials have also prepared for June 16, where a potential NBA Finals game in Manhattan might overlap with a World Cup game between France and Senegal held at the New Jersey stadium. “This is a moment we’ve been preparing for, we’ve been hoping for and we feel fully prepared for,” Mamdani stated.
State and local authorities further discussed security measures aimed at minimizing crime and terrorist threats during this period. “You’ll see more of a police presence, but know that behind the scenes our cyber-analysts and experts are focused on this with every fiber of their being,” Hochul emphasized, highlighting a 16-year low in subway crime rates.
Preparedness extends to dealing with weather challenges like high heat, flash floods, and heightened traffic levels, Mamdani explained. The World Cup championship match is set to take place at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.
