Senate Republicans Reject Efforts to Kill Trump’s $2 Billion Fund
Senate Republicans defended against permanently ending President Donald Trump’s $2 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund. Despite internal disagreements, an amendment by Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., aimed at redirecting the fund to the nation’s fraud fund, was blocked by both Republicans and Democrats.
A dozen Republicans supported the amendment, reflecting the disapproval of the fund within the party. The amendment’s failure might stall moves to eliminate the fund, after prolonged debates during the Senate’s voting session on the GOP’s $70 billion immigration enforcement package.
Bipartisan Criticism
While both parties criticized Trump’s fund, diverting the funds proved controversial. Sen. Thom Tillis opposed the budget reconciliation package, which included $1 billion for Trump projects, without resolving the fund’s fate.
The fund emerged from a settlement between the Trump family and the IRS. Republicans fear misuse by individuals convicted in the Capitol riots could occur without strict controls. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche assured the fund would not proceed, but Trump hinted at uncertainty regarding its future.
Contradictory Views
Despite the administration’s stance, Trump expressed support: ‘The weaponization fund, as far as I’m concerned, was a beautiful thing.’
Tillis argued that codifying the end of the fund would remove election burdens on Republican members. He stated, ‘Why not use this moment to codify that?’ and avoid future complications pending the White House’s intentions.
Future Legislative Actions
Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., joined criticism with an amendment to ensure the fund does not reemerge. Critics suggested future actions should be deferred, allowing the administration to attempt revival before addressing it again.
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., remarked, ‘People can address it when it happens,’ encouraging a wait-and-see approach to potential fund revivals.
