Ocasio-Cortez Address Allegations Against Maine Senate Candidate
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has expressed the need for time to evaluate recent allegations regarding Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. The New York Times recently published a report with troubling claims from several women previously involved with Platner. The allegations include rape fantasies, heavy drinking, and violent behavior.
Platner has admitted to struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from his military service, leading to self-medication with alcohol. He described this period as a dark time in his life, asserting that he has been upfront about his challenges.
Lyndsey Fifield, an ex-girlfriend, detailed an incident where Platner allegedly forced her into a bedroom, twisted her arm behind her back, and locked her inside. Fifield also noted Platner’s tattoo of a Totenkopf, an emblem used by Nazi camps, suggesting he and his military unit identified with its symbolism.
Criticism against Platner also encompasses derogatory comments on various social issues and his inappropriate interactions with women outside his marriage. A Reddit post from 2013 revealed Platner’s contentious views, blaming rape victims for insufficient self-protection.
Such controversies have raised questions about Platner’s fit for candidacy as he aims to challenge Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. His campaign emphasizes taxing billionaires and reducing costs for working-class Americans. As Maine’s Senate primaries approach, Platner continues to engage with political figures to reinforce his prospective candidacy.
Maine will conduct its Senate primaries next Tuesday.
