Aaron Judge, a prominent player for the New York Yankees, has won three of the last four American League MVP awards. Despite not performing at his absolute best this season, he remained a strong candidate for the MVP honor by the season’s end. However, recent developments might jeopardize his prospects for the award and his future career.
At the end of May, Judge experienced shoulder pain during a swing. As of now, the Yankees have not identified an apparent cause for their star player’s discomfort through their preliminary examinations.
Recently, reports indicated that the team is seeking the expertise of Dr. Gregory Pearl. Dr. Pearl specializes in complex vascular procedures and management of thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) for high-performance athletes.
Thoracic outlet syndrome would be a worst-case scenario for Judge and the Yankees; not only would the diagnosis end his season, but it would possibly compromise his ability to play at his peak condition in the future.
This condition affects nerves between the neck and shoulder, and recovery, even post-surgery, might limit an athlete’s strength and speed. Examples like Matt Harvey of the New York Mets in 2015, who struggled post-procedure, highlight these challenges. Although position players might recover more effectively than pitchers, a severe case of TOS could hinder Judge’s ability to regain his MVP-winning form.
While waiting for Judge’s diagnosis and hoping Dr. Pearl can rule out TOS, Yankees fans anxiously await good news for their captain.
