The New York Yankees have impressed in 2026, potentially standing as the top team in the American League. Key players have been pivotal in this success. First baseman Ben Rice has consistently delivered strong performances at the plate, contributing significantly in the first third of the season. The return of Gerrit Cole to the mound after a hiatus since 2024 brings hope for the team’s pitching strength. Cam Schlitter and Cody Bellinger have also excelled, particularly Bellinger, who has been outstanding in his second year playing in New York.
Aaron Judge remains crucial for the Yankees’ aspirations. The superstar hinted at another record-breaking season early on. However, he experienced a dip in form, noticeable in May, when his on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) was at .805, lower than his typical standards. Recent developments have shed light on potential reasons behind this decline.

Judge missed Tuesday’s game, with the team providing little information initially. Yankees manager Aaron Boone later admitted uncertainty about the issue affecting Judge. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Boone mentioned, “He’s going back for some more imaging. They just want to get some more specific spots, and so we’ll have more on that later.” He emphasized the need for clarity to devise a course of action and establish a timeline.
The team eventually revealed on Thursday that Judge has a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side. This injury will sideline him indefinitely, with a re-evaluation planned in 4-6 weeks.

Despite the setback, the Yankees remain hopeful. The organization expressed their expectation for Judge to return later this season. The American League’s overall weakness this year provides an advantage for the Yankees, offering confidence in a postseason placement even in Judge’s absence. Yet, the Tampa Bay Rays’ lead in the AL East poses a challenge, as missing out on the division title could impact postseason positioning. A prolonged absence of Judge or a failure to recover fully could affect these plans significantly.
If Judge manages a comeback before October, his impact could swing momentum back in the Yankees’ favor for a strong postseason run. His presence on the field enhances their competitiveness vastly. While healing, Judge remains one of baseball’s top hitters. A full recovery could mean an unstoppable force for the Yankees.
